Sodium Tolyltriazole, known commonly as TT-50, is a pale to amber colored liquid that is a 50% aqueous solution of the sodium salt of tolyltriazole. It is an effective corrosion inhibitor for copper and copper alloys like brass or bronze, as well as other metals such as silver, zinc, lead, and nickel.
One reason for the use of TT-50 over pure TTA is the solubility of TT-50 is greater and therefore it is easier to formulate with. This allows for faster production of treating solutions through simple dilutions to the desired concentration and it is very effective even at low concentrations. Many applications require less that 1% treat level and almost all recommend less than 6%. TT-50 has excellent solubility in glycols and is also miscible with alcohols. It is recommended in formulations with a pH of below 2 or above 10. It also has a lower odor than benzotriazole, and can work synergistically with other corrosion inhibitors (i.e. sodium benzoate, borax, silicate, nitrate, molybdate, and phosphates).
The mechanism of action of TT-50 is similar to that of standard tolyltriazole. It functions by reacting with copper oxide on the surface of copper containing metals to form a strong, insoluble complex that acts as a barrier for corrosion. This protective layer is a few molecules thick on the surface of the metal and provides both mechanical and electrochemical protection by corrosive materials which is both thermal and oxidatively stable and difficult to remove. In solution, it forms complexes and so also prevents galvanic corrosion of other metals.
Recommended uses for TT-50 include use in circulating cooling systems or cooling towers, air conditioning systems, and cutting and grinding fluids. It is also useful in specialty lubricants such as hydraulic fluids and automotive coolants or antifreeze. Other unique applications for the product range from runway deicer, gas dehydration vessels, water based lacquers and waxes, soap cleaners, detergents, and strong alkali or acid cleaners.
