This week much of the Midwest and Northeast is experiencing dangerously cold conditions and heavy snowfalls. Is your business prepared for this round of winter weather? Below are three things to keep in mind as you brace for this week’s arctic conditions:
- Plan for closures
Many shipping terminals and warehouses may be closed or working with limited staff due to weather concerns. Plan for and expect delays in shipping during this time and be flexible with delivery times & dates. Also, make sure to communicate with persons responsible for scheduling your deliveries if your business is closed or has limited hours. - Plan for complications
Cold weather makes for many added complications when shipping chemical products. Liquid products become more viscous in cold temperatures, so offloading might take longer than expected. You might want to ask about having material steamed prior to arrival for an additional fee. Also, pay attention to the freezing points listed on the SDS of your products. Don’t store packaged liquids in drums or totes outdoors or in unheated warehouses if they may be in danger of freezing. - Plan for safety
Make sure to keep unloading areas and docks free of ice and snow so that trucks can safety enter and leave your facility. Oftentimes subzero temperatures can cause valves to freeze on tanks or equipment to malfunction. Make sure you are stocked with deicers and antifreeze to keep everything in safe working order. Limit the time your staff spends outdoors if the conditions become too extreme.
