Application
Methanol is a clear, water-soluble, and readily biodegradable liquid that is the simplest member of the alcohol family, consisting of four parts hydrogen, one part oxygen, and one part carbon. Commonly produced on an industrial scale from natural gas, it serves as a key building block for numerous chemical derivatives used to make products such as building materials, foams, resins, plastics, paints, polyester, and various health and pharmaceutical items. Methanol is also a clean-burning fuel with growing appeal as an alternative energy source for vehicles, ships, cooking, and heating due to its environmental and economic advantages. Major applications include the production of acetic acid, formaldehyde, MTBE, biodiesel, gasoline blending, dimethyl terephthalate, methyl methacrylate, methylamines, and chloro-methane.
