Application
Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) is a clear, colorless, fast-evaporating, VOC-exempt solvent with a moderate hydrogen-bonding strength and substantial polarity, making it an effective replacement for esters, glycol ethers, and ketones in various formulations. It has a fast evaporation rate comparable to MEK and toluene, low toxicity, low skin irritation, and a mild methanol-like odor. DMC is partially soluble in water and dissolves most coating resins, making it valuable as a co-solvent in acrylic, urethane, and alkyd systems. Environmentally friendly and synthesized from carbon monoxide, DMC is used in coatings, adhesives, and as a raw material in methylation, carboxylation, and carbomethoxylation processes, including pharmaceutical synthesis. It also serves as an electrolyte component in lithium-ion batteries for applications such as notebook PCs, cell phones, HEVs, and PHEVs, and as a green cleaning agent in chemical processing environments.
