Tributyl phosphate (TBP) is a clear and water white plasticizer. Since it is also a flame-retarding plasticizer it has a high boiling point. TBP can be used for cellulose esters, lacquers, plastic and vinyl resins. It is a strong polar solvent that can also be used in the production of solutions of synthetic resins and natural rubber. TBP serves as a wetting agent in textiles and in the field of adhesives. Along with its wetting abilities, TBP is a neutral extractant that can extract acids and metal cations.
TBP can be used in a wide variety of applications such as a pigment grinding assistant and an anti-foaming agent in paper and protective coatings. TBP is perfect for these kinds of applications because it has no residual odor. Tributyl phosphate is also utilized as a defoamer in various applications including vinyl latex emulsions, rubber-based paints, casein, inks, cement, protein- or resin-based adhesives, and textile sizings. If used with a small amount of isopropanol, TBP will destroy or prevent foam in most detergent solutions. Not only does it do this for detergent solutions, but it can also be used in anti-freeze solutions of the ethylene glycol-borax type to reduce foaming as well. TBP is an effective solvent that is used to blend materials that are difficult to dissolve, making it an excellent choice as a solvent for lithographic inks. It is also used in the preparation of concentrates for agricultural herbicides and fungicides.
