The year 2020 is bound to be a year for the history books and this hurricane season will be no different. Forecasters and experts alike have agreed that this will be an above-normal storm season in the Atlantic. Along with a higher than normal storm activity its also been noted that the hurricanes in the area will tend to be more severe – suspending operations on average, for nine days comparted to 1-2 days in the Pacific Ocean.
With this season moving at such fast pace not only will the damage be significant, but the storm names are also going to run out, something that has not happened in years. A system is named when winds reach 39 miles an hour and becomes a tropical storm. In fact, this will be one of the most active seasonal forecasts produced by the NOAA in its 22 years of hurricane outlooks. Should the forecast pan out, it would be the second most active season in history following behind 2005. There are many different factors contributing to the conditions that will make this season extremely active. These include the warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures, reduced vertical wind shear, weaker tropical trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon. With all these conditions expected to continue for the next few months it has been predicted that the probability of at least one major hurricane hitting the U.S. this season is 75%. This an increase from 52% for the past century.
With COVID-19 already wreaking havoc on the U.S. and its supply systems, this hurricane season could spell out disaster for many supply chains. In order to counter act this, businesses have been preparing for the hurricane season while taking into consideration precautions regarding COVID-19 as well. These precautions would include ordering earlier and allowing for longer lead times, having secondary suppliers and options throughout their supply chains, and making sure their employees have safe and secure areas to shelter in if needed.
With everything that has come out about the 2020 hurricane season it is said that it will be like going through 2 complete hurricane seasons in just a year.
