Last September the Trump Administration enacted a 10% tariff on more than $200 billion worth of Chinese goods. Over the past weekend, President Trump announced via Twitter that the tariffs will be increased from 10% to 25% effective May 10, 2019. The increase had initially been slated to go into effect on January 1st, 2019 but had been postponed to March 1st, 2019 due to ongoing trade negotiations between the U.S. and China. A Chinese delegation is meeting in Washington this week yet, and it is likely the final decision will be pending the outcome of these talks.
ChemCeed will continue to monitor this unfolding situation, but we want to make our customers fully aware that the new tariff rate may come into effect on May 10th. If enacted, any goods imported from China that are subject to the tariff must pay the additional 25% duty if they arrive to a U.S. port on May 10th or a later date.
