Researchers at Evonik Industries may have found a way to use a plastic composite to help mend bones. The biodegradable plastic would replace metal and steel rods. Unlike metal parts which stay in the body permanently or require surgery to remove, these new composites would be absorbed by the body as the bone heals. The polymers used for the composites are made from materials that naturally occur in bones.
