Application

Polybutyl Titanate (PBT) is a multifunctional anti-corrosive coating chemical valued for its ability to promote adhesion, act as a polymer cross-linker, and form protective polymeric titanium dioxide layers. Widely used in heat- and corrosion-resistant paints, PBT is commonly incorporated into air-dry coatings and high-performance formulations capable of withstanding temperatures up to 500 °F. It is compatible with zinc or alumina pigments for brush or spray applications and can be combined with silicone resins to create durable air-drying coatings. In addition, PBT functions as a Lewis acid catalyst in esterification and transesterification reactions. Paints containing PBT cure through hydrolysis, forming a thin Ti–O–Si layer that bonds securely to the substrate, though they remain moisture sensitive during manufacture and storage.
