Application
Glyoxal is a highly versatile crosslinking agent and intermediate chemical used across numerous industries for its unique reactivity and functional benefits. In coatings, it is a key component in producing glycoluril-based amino crosslinking resins for powder, can, and coil coatings, offering reduced formaldehyde emissions and enhanced film flexibility compared to other amino crosslinkers. In electronics, it serves as a building block for glycidated phenol compounds, improving stability in epoxy laminates and molding compounds. In the oilfield industry, Glyoxal functions as an H₂S scavenger and as a crosslinker for hydrocolloids to increase viscosity in drilling fluids. The paper sector uses Glyoxal-crosslinked polymers to boost wet and dry strength and enable efficient coating, while in textiles it enhances anti-wrinkle and softening properties. It is also valuable in personal care, leather tanning, and water treatment due to its crosslinking and biocidal properties. Additional applications include disinfectants, polymer modification (starch, cellulose, proteins, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl alcohols), and wood hardening for improved moisture resistance. Glyoxal 40, a commercial form, is widely employed in textiles, paper, epoxy curing, cosmetics, oil & gas, and cleaners.
