Application
Chloroform is primarily used today in the production of chlorodifluoromethane (R-22), which serves as a key precursor to tetrafluoroethylene—the main building block of Teflon. Prior to the Montreal Protocol, R-22 was also widely used as a refrigerant. In 2002, the United States implemented production limits on hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), including R-22, to comply with environmental regulations.
