Application

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a widely used chelating agent primarily employed to bind metal ions in aqueous solutions. Its strong metal ion affinity makes it effective in dissolving limescale and preventing metal-catalyzed reactions. In personal care products such as shampoos and cleaners, EDTA salts function as stabilizers, while in food, EDTA is added as a preservative to prevent oxidative discoloration caused by metal ions. In the pulp and paper industry, EDTA inhibits metal-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide during chlorine-free bleaching processes. The acid form of EDTA is nearly insoluble in water and is preferred in systems where sodium ions are undesirable or where only slightly soluble products are needed. Its salts, formed by adding alkalis, are more soluble and commonly used in various applications.
