Application
Acetyl Tributyl Citrate (ATBC) is used as a biodegradable plasticizer for PVC and cellulose derivates, and it is approved for food contact materials. It is widely used in nitrocellulose (NC) coatings as well as NC food packaging inks, where it functions as an external plasticizer to improve film formation and flexibility. It is compatible with a wide variety of resin systems, including acrylic, methacrylic, ethylcellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and urethane polymer formulations, and demonstrates good plasticization effect across both aqueous and solvent-based systems. ATBC contributes to resistance against cracking and degradation over time. Its safety profile and regulatory approvals make it particularly attractive as a phthalate-free alternative in formulations where food contact or sensitive end-use requirements must be met. ATBC is also used as an emollient for personal care/cosmetics products such as aerosol hair sprays and nail polishes. In addition, ATBC can be used for pharmaceutical coatings (USP grade available), lubricants, and inks.
